Almost everyday in Brevard County children are removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment, and neglect and placed into state custody. These children need someone to speak for them to make sure that they receive the services and care that they so desperately need and deserve. What they each need, is a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. A Guardian ad Litem (GAL for short) is a specially trained, child advocate whose dedicated advocacy insures a dependent child’s safety, well-being, best interests and permanent placement. Working within a GAL team of program staff and attorneys, and alongside community-based social workers and community service providers, a GAL volunteer serves as the “voice for the child” in judicial dependency proceedings and in helping the child navigate the foster/relative care system. Statistics have proven that children who have a GAL volunteer receives the services they need, do better in school, and spend less time in foster care.
The Brevard County Guardian ad Litem program currently has 250 active volunteers selflessly working to improve the lives of children in our local community. However, there are currently over 1000 children in the dependency system and a substantial percentage of these children do not have a Guardian ad Litem to advocate for them and ensure that their best interest is being expressed. Due to the drastic increase of children needing effective advocacy, the Guardian ad Litem program needs more volunteer support more than ever.
Our children need the residents of Brevard County to move to action. Become a child advocate by volunteering with the Guardian ad Litem Program. Be the voice of a child in need. No prior experience required. All training and certification is done through the program. A new volunteer training class will be held on Monday, July 18th. The next new volunteer class will be held over a course of two days on Saturday, September 17th and Saturday, September 24th.
